Whitegate, County Cork

Whitegate ()〔(【引用サイトリンク】url=http://www.logainm.ie/12303.aspx )〕 is a small village on the eastern shore of Cork Harbour in County Cork, Ireland. It is within the townland of Ballincarroonig or Ballincarroony. It was once a busy fishing port and well known for its lace-making. In the 20th-century Ireland's only oil refinery was built on Corkbeg Island, one side of the bay and the Aghada Power Generating plant on the other. The writer William Wall b. 1955 grew up here, though his home, then vacant, was destroyed in a fire in 2008〔(【引用サイトリンク】url=http://www.irishexaminer.com/archives/2008/0618/ireland/three-homes-damaged-in-fire-65298.html )〕 in a suspected arson attack.〔(【引用サイトリンク】url=http://www.irishexaminer.com/archives/2008/0619/ireland/man-arrested-after-arson-attack-65386.html )〕 Irish writers Maeve Binchy and John Montague also lived nearby at Roche's Point for a time (see entry for Roche's Point Lighthouse).
There is a 14th-century church in the grounds of Corkbeg churchyard, now a Church of Ireland parish.
Trabolgan Holiday Village is located nearby.
